We pay great attention to the quality of service which Instinox provides to its customers.

ABOUT BOLTS

A fastener is a product that is used to affix or join two or more objects together. Fasteners can be used to close a container such as a bag, a box or a wooden plank etc. Bolts are manufactured by forging and threading process. Threaded fasteners are commonly used for a multiple of reasons. Apart from the strength benefits (a fastener properly threaded or a bolted joint is much stronger than unthreaded bolts or screws) bolts are also reversible, which means they can be taken apart after they are assembled. They are cost- efficient and available in a wide range of size. Since threaded fasteners like bolts can be used many times in a single application. They can add extra weight to a product. Additionally, they often need retightening when located in unstable places. They are susceptible to variations and many safety wire or other added features to further hold in place and enable proper performance.

MANUFACTURING PROCESS OF BOLTS

  • Raw material inspection & storage
  • Raw material for the bolt is to be decided by the designer based on its application. Material to be used is supposed to be inspected and then proper warehouse location is to be identified in order to avoid rust formation and proper coverage needs to be provided.
  • Unthreaded bolt manufacturing
  • Moreover casting and forging are used in this stage. Other methods may also be used like sintering and prototyping.

CNC MACHINING

After the part has been manufactured through forging/casting method, it is then machined to the specific dimensions usually by CNC. The operations followed here are namely pointing, facing and grooving.

HEAT TREATMENT

Heat treatment is done after machining is done to make the fasteners tensile strong. Hardening and tempering operations are then followed. Hardening is done such that bolt is heated to a temperature of 850-900 degree C and then quenched in the cooling media. Then the bolt is again re-heated to bring back the complete hardened bolt less soft, so that the bolt remains strong enough. Re-heating is done to bring down the brittleness of the bolt which happened during hardening.

SURFACE FINISHING

The surface finishing process comes next. Usually, grinding process is carried out to make the surface smoother according to the surface finish specification.

THREAD ROLLING

After the finishing procedure, thread rolling is done with two dyes. One is stationary and another is a moving dye which actually exerts force on the bolts and forms threads. Threads on bolts may be fine, medium or coarse depending upon the application of the bolt.

COATING

After thread rolling, bolt fasteners are coated in order to avoid rust and corrosion. A fine example of bolt coating is geomet coating in bolts which is tested to Salt Spray Test, depending upon the number of hours as mentioned. Machinery is used to determine coating thickness along with other different measuring instruments such as coating thickness meter.

TYPES OF BOLTS

  • Hex Bolts – These are used in machinery and construction. Fully threaded hex bolts are also called tap bolts.
  • Wood bolts – These have long threads and a smooth shank for pulling two pieces of material together, they can be used in wood and other soft materials.
  • J- Bolts – J shaped bolts are used as tie downs or fastened as an open eye bolt.
  • U- Bolts – Bolts in U shape are used for attaching to pipe or either round surfaces. Also available with a square bend.
  • Shoulder bolts – These bolts also known as stripper bolts are used to create a pivot point.
  • Elevator bolts – Elevated bolts are moreover used in conveyer systems. They have a large flat head.
  • Eye bolts – A bolt with a circular ring on the head end used for attaching a rope or a chain.
  • Lag bolts – Bolts with a wood thread ad pointed tip.
  • Carriage bolts – Bolts with a proper finish and round head that have a small square section underneath are called carriage bolts.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOLT & SCREW

  • Screws are fully threaded whereas not all bolts are fully threaded.
  • Screws are used without nuts or whereas bolts require nuts to keep a fix over the joint.
  • Many screws require a screwdriver head fitting, instead of an external wrench and bolts require an external wrench through nuts.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

At Instinox, all fasteners and nuts are subject to strict inspection and quality checks at all stages of the manufacturing process, from starting material purchasing to product shipment. They are optically inspected for conformity to ASTM, ASME, MSS, DIN, EN, and JIS codes and standards. At Our requests, official certified agencies are called to witness the material reports, dimension and quality conformity of products.

Test Certificates are given to the manufacturer after third party inspection under the standards: EN 10204/3.1B, Raw materials Certificate, 100% Radiology Test report Test Certificate.
